Urban Poverty Dynamics and Internal Migration in Shaping the Social Landscape of the City of Baghdad

Urban poverty constitutes a complex socio-economic phenomenon whose impacts extend across multiple dimensions of social and economic life. In Baghdad, this issue has become increasingly significant due to the marked rise in urban poverty rates over recent decades, alongside the city's rapid demographic and social transformations.
Poverty is considered one of the principal drivers of internal migration from rural areas and marginalized urban communities toward the center of Baghdad in search of better employment opportunities and improved access to public services. This migration has contributed to reshaping the city's social landscape through changes in population structure, patterns of social behavior and interaction, and the distribution of resources and essential services.
This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach based on a comprehensive review of relevant theoretical literature and an analysis of available statistical indicators and official data. It aims to examine the relationship between urban poverty and internal migration in Baghdad and to explore their implications for the city's social fabric. Drawing on an integrated theoretical framework and official indicators, the study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of this issue and to propose a set of policy recommendations to mitigate its adverse effects. In particular, it emphasizes the importance of adopting comprehensive urban policies that address the social dimensions of internal migration while strengthening social protection programs.
