Revelation as a Source of Knowledge from the Qur'anic Perspective: An Analytical Study

Abstract

This study aims to examine divine revelation as a fundamental source of knowledge in the Qur’an and to explore its position within the epistemological framework presented by the Holy Qur’an. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach through the examination of Qur’anic texts related to revelation and the subsequent analysis of these texts in light of authoritative exegetical sources, with the aim of uncovering the nature of the relationship between revelation and knowledge.

The first section of the study addresses the concepts of revelation and knowledge in the Qur’an, examining the linguistic and terminological meanings of revelation. It also discusses the concept of knowledge and its means, with particular emphasis on reason and sense perception as two of the most prominent epistemic tools recognized by the Qur’an. The second section is devoted to explaining revelation as the supreme source of knowledge through an investigation of the Qur’anic foundations of its epistemic authority, its role in unveiling realities that lie beyond the scope of ordinary human perception, and the major characteristics of revealed knowledge.

The study concludes that, from the Qur’anic perspective, knowledge is not confined to reason and sense perception alone. Rather, the Qur’an affirms revelation as the primary source of divine knowledge, particularly in matters related to the unseen. The study further demonstrates that revealed knowledge is characterized by certainty and stability, as well as comprehensiveness and coherence, in contrast to human knowledge. Moreover, it plays a central role in guiding human beings toward a comprehensive understanding of existence and life within the framework of divine guidance.
